May Your Will Be Done On Earth As It Is In Heaven.

In the last blog entry, we saw that part of Jesus’s mission statement encompassed more than personal salvation.  His mission included proclamation of the good news of salvation that was open to everyone, starting with the poor and the “outsiders”; compassion for the sick, sorrowful, and the brokenhearted; and a commitment to justice, which included a proclamation of freedom and release of the oppressed.

Jesus was reclaiming what had been outside the domain of God’s will.  And he commands us to do the same.

Now, I have to admit that whenever we Christians talk about “reclaiming” and “seeking justice,” I get nervous.  For example, we hear so much about “reclaiming our families for God…” or “reclaiming our nation for God…”and it’s usually against someone else who is (insert enemy group here).  However, the Bible makes it clear that “…our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms”  (Ephesians6:12).  Our mission is to love - love God, and love all people.  Period.

The first realm that we need to reclaim to bring God’s Kingdom is our own kingdoms - the little domains in our lives that we control, including our minds and hearts.  I believe this is what it means “to surrender our lives to God’s will”- we are fulfilling the Lord’s prayer, when we say, “may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”  As we learn to surrender more and more of what we hold as our own, His Kingdom is being realized in our lives.  And through loving others, we can bring the realities of God’s Kingdom to our spheres of influence.

How can God’s will be done in my life as it is in heaven?
