FAQs: Spiritual Gifts, Part 4

Why are spiritual gifts given?
Ephesians 4:12b-13 says it best. “… so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” As believers continue to use their spiritual gifts in serving others, the Body of Christ experiences greater unity, spiritual maturity, and Christlikeness.
Which spiritual gifts are the most important?
Every spiritual gift is equally important and necessary to the functioning of the Body of Christ. As Paul says, “The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you” (1 Corinthians 12:21). The “upfront gifts” are not more important than the “behind the scenes” gifts. Every believer has a part to play in serving in the church.
Do the so-called “miraculous gifts” still exist?
The spiritual gifts of tongues, interpretation of tongues, healing, miracles, and prophecy are sometimes called the “miraculous gifts.” These gifts are controversial. Designed to Serve teaches that all gifts – including the “miraculous gifts” – are still at work because the Holy Spirit is still here on earth. When the rapture occurs, all believers will be caught up in the air with the Lord – and the Holy Spirit [THE gift] will go with them.
